Storms and Floods

AMG have responded to the Storms and Floods that have hit the UK in the last few days. Exceptionally heavy rain fell on the night of Thursday 14th June and continued throughout Friday 15th. This led to several rivers bursting their banks and creating a surge of Flood claims.

Garden becomes a lake.

AMG started to receive Instructions via the Emergency Help Line on Thursday night and these accelerated during Friday. The New Claims Team worked throughout the weekend taking details of new losses and passing them to the Adjusting teams.

The Storms hit various locations but volume has been highest in Coventry and Leamington Spa in the West Midlands, Leicester and Lincoln in the East Midlands and Leeds, Sheffield and Wakefield in Yorkshire.

The response from our Adjusting teams has been very impressive. By close of business on Sunday all claims where contact details had been provided were visited and emergency works coordinated and agreed.

As ever, these events have produced a range of losses many with substantial claim Reserves. In addition the unique approach of the British public was in full evidence. In Yorkshire, one of our Adjusters discovered an elderly couple in their bed; faced with rising flood water the couple had wrapped their bed in sheets of polythene as they prepared to sit it out.

On another claim, Janet Pritchard from our Leeds office discovered an elderly couple who were refusing to move out of the property when it was clearly uninhabitable. The husband of the couple had medical problems and these were made worse by the presence of dirty and drenched carpets throughout the ground floor. After discovering that none of the Disaster Management Contractors could assist that night, Janet donned her overalls and proceeded to lift and remove the carpets from the ground floor thus making it possible for the policyholders to stay without endangering their health further.

AMG would like to thank all their staff who worked long hours over the weekend. We have a terrific reputation for responding to these events and this was only enhanced by the efforts of the Adjusters, Secretaries and others who gave up their weekends at short notice.
