Cumbria Floods Update - Wednesday 25 November

25/11/2009

As reported in yesterday’s update our Loss Adjusters are now able to access all areas and we are in the process of completing outstanding visits to damaged properties.

Cumbria has escaped further flooding but is very much on alert as rainfall continued through to the early hours of Wednesday morning, with water levels peaking at 3:00am this morning. Although river levels have started to fall with further rainfall they will reach their peak early this afternoon and with the ground still saturated the Environmental Agency has expressed concerns that there is a possibility of further flooding. The possible collapse of the Calva Bridge into the River Derwent in Workington threatens to knock out up to 2,000 telephone lines. High tide is expected at the bridge at 17:15pm today.

There are currently still 13 flood warnings in place, mainly around Keswick and Cockermouth, with showers forecast throughout the day. Following the collapse of the six bridges in the area, the review of all 1,800 bridges in the area continues with subsequent transport and logistical problems.
